Australian employer guide
How to check award rates before payroll
Before payroll, an Australian employer should confirm the likely award and classification, compare the current adult base minimum, review the operative date, and check other conditions such as penalties and allowances. AwardGuard can support that comparison for five awards; it does not certify payroll or determine coverage.
A five-step pre-payroll review
- List the roles and pay rates being processed.
- Confirm the candidate award and classification from duties and official guidance.
- Compare each supported adult base rate and record the operative date.
- Review penalties, loadings, overtime, allowances, breaks, and agreements separately.
- Save the source and decision notes for the payroll review record.
What if a rate looks below the base minimum?
Treat it as a review flag, not a legal conclusion. Recheck the classification, source date, employment arrangement, and any lawful arrangement that may affect the comparison. If uncertain, use official Fair Work guidance or qualified advice.
Use the payroll award rate checker or download the free 1 July checklist.
Verify against the FWC Modern Awards Pay Database and the relevant FWO pay guide. The applicable award always prevails.
Limitations
AwardGuard provides general information only. It does not determine award coverage or classification, and it does not provide authoritative apprentice rates or a complete calculation of penalties, loadings, allowances, overtime, breaks, or enterprise-agreement terms.
Common questions
- When should a payroll team re-check award rates?
- Re-check after a Fair Work rate change, when the operative date arrives, when duties or classifications change, and before a pay run that depends on award minimums.
