How to understand SCHADS classifications

Plain-English overview of SCHADS classification concepts for employers, with links to Fair Work sources. Not a determination tool.

SCHADS classifications are structured levels in the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award that describe the kind of work, skill, and responsibility expected at each level. Getting the level right matters because adult base minimums (and related entitlements) attach to the classification — not to informal job titles or NDIS item codes.

Where are the official definitions?

Classification definitions live in the award instrument: SCHADS Industry Award 2010 (MA000100). Fair Work Ombudsman explains the general approach at Fair Work Ombudsman — Award classifications. Current pay figures by classification appear in the Modern Awards Pay Database.

How should employers read a classification?

  1. Collect a clear description of duties actually performed (not only the job ad title).
  2. Compare those duties with the award’s level descriptors and indicative tasks.
  3. Prefer the level that best matches the work as a whole; do not “average” unrelated levels without reading the award.
  4. Confirm coverage and any enterprise agreement that may interact with the award.
  5. Look up the adult base rate for that classification and check penalties separately.

What AwardGuard does and does not do

AwardGuard lists SCHADS classifications and checks adult base rates you enter against Fair Work Commission data on /awards/schads and /check. It is not a classification determination tool and does not replace reading the award or seeking advice. For a broader workflow, see how to classify employees under awards.

Compare what you pay with the current adult base minimum using the free AwardGuard rate checker. Always confirm against the award instrument and Fair Work sources — the award prevails.

Limitations

  • This guide does not assign a classification to any person or role.
  • Streams and schedules within SCHADS can differ; always use the applicable part of the award.
  • General information only — not legal advice. The award prevails.
